Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park Just a quick 20-minute drive southwest of Morrison, Old Stone Fort Archaelogical Park has one of the most fascinating hiking trails in the entire state. The Old Stone Fort was built around 2,000 years ago by ancient Native Americans and used continuously for about 500 years before being abandoned. When it was found by European settlers, they couldn't quite figure out what it was used for, so they called it a fort. In 1966, the fort was purchased by the state of Tennessee, and the park was born. Its main hiking trail offers a trip back in time, which helps the hiker get a better understanding of the continent's long history. It follows the walls of the Old Stone Fort, passing former Native American ceremonial gathering places, including the fort's original entrance, which was built to face the exact place where the sun rises during the summer solstice. Panels, replicas, and photos that include information about ancient Native Americans are ever-present, giving the hiker a glimpse of how life used to be around in the Morrison area. more Rock Island State Park The 883-acre Rock Island State Park is located at the meeting point of the Caney Fork, Collins, and Rocky rivers and offers some absolutely breathtaking views. That includes the Great Falls, a 30-foot waterfall that was used to power a cotton textile mill over a century ago. The area became a park 50 years ago and quickly became one of the best destinations around for hikers, swimmers, or fishers. If you decide to stay overnight during your hiking trip, you can use any of the park's 10 gorgeous and well-equipped cabins, open all year round. There are also campsites where visitors can park their trailers and RV or set up their tents. Savage Gulf Natural Area The 15,590-acre Savage Gulf Natural Area features over 50 miles of hiking trails of various difficulty, making it a great hiking spot for beginners and veterans alike. Visitors will be treated to some fantastic views, from steep ledges to beautiful waterfalls. The most popular hiking trail is the Big Creek Rim Trail, with 6 miles of difficult terrain and fantastic views. The Tennessee State Parks department manages and operates the area, which has picnic and camping areas as well as a visitor center where hikers can get trail maps. From old Native American structures to incredible waterfalls, locals and visitors in Morrison are blessed with a great variety of landmarks to discover on their hikes. Experienced hikers will find new challenges, while those who are just getting into this hobby will certainly discover what the fuss is all about. The ribs are to die for and the beef brisket is worth traveling for. Specialties include fried catfish and the frog legs plate. You can get family packs to feed four people. Hickory Creek Barbecue When you want to eat on the run, the Hickory Creek Barbecue food truck can be found at various locations such as farmers markets and malls. The super friendly staff will serve you with fresh smoked and barbecued meats at great value. Come prepared with a big appetite because you'll get a lot of food. The barbecued chicken wings are recommended as is the smoked pulled pork sandwich. You can now get Gatorade slushies at Hickory Creek too. Check out the Facebook page for their locations. Collins River BBQ & Cafe Collins River BBQ is a 15-minute drive from Morrison on East Main Street in McMinnville. Exposed brickwork, wooden floors, the eclectic decor, and low lighting give this place a cool, laid-back vibe. As well as serving great barbecued food, they specialize in craft beers, and offer live music. The menu features a varied selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and wraps, and combo plates. Their specialty sides include gouda mac and cheese, baked sweet potato, and sweet potato fries. Porky's Pit BBQ A similar distance in the opposite direction is Porky's Pit on McMinnville Highway in Manchester. It's a quaint little place with a walk-up window and drive through, and there is some seating outside. The staff are always friendly and the service is quick. On the menu you'll find hickory smoked beef brisket, pork, and turkey breast. Plates come with two vegetables of your choice. You can get family packs with a pound of meat, or half family packs. The pulled pork is highly recommended. High Roller Smokers BBQ The High Roller Smokers BBQ is a food truck based in McMinnville that serves at farmers markets and other events. They pride themselves on only buying the highest quality meats and ingredients for their customers. As well as the regular barbecue offerings, they have menu items that include herb and garlic pork loin and lemon pepper rubbed chicken. Their sides include roasted rosemary garlic potatoes, Fuji flamed roasted apples, and broccoli, rice, and cheese casserole. Check the Facebook page for locations. The mansion is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also in McMinnville, Cumberland Caverns offers 32 miles of beautiful underground landscape. As you begin the walking tour of the U.S. National Landmark, you'll see underground waterfalls, stunning rock formations, and quiet pools along the way. The caverns are open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nashville A visit to Music City opens the door to a variety of sights and sounds for all ages. For the music lover, you'll want to put the Grand Ole Opry on your list and make your way to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Visit ancient Greece at Centennial Park where the full-scale replica of The Parthenon resides. Other Nashville points of interest include The Hermitage, which is a beautiful display of Greek Revival architecture and home to President Jackson. Kids will enjoy spending the day at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere where they'll see wildlife from around the world. After a day of fun, light up the night with a visit to Tootsies Orchid Lounge for live music, food, and beverages. Chattanooga Chattanooga has things to do above and below ground. For a view from the top, Lookout Mountain is a visual wonderland of beauty with caves and trails throughout the Civil War battle site. Get focused and take a memorable pic of 145-foot Ruby Falls. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Townsend A little further south, but worth the drive, are the Tuckaleechee Caverns. Step down into the cool recesses of the caverns with their unusual formations. Tour the underground network with a guide leading the way through ancient passageways and see a stunning double waterfall. Absorb the peace and quiet while walking the same passages that moonshiners would tread. The caverns are open seven days a week with seasonal tours available March 15 through Nov. 15. Vehicle History One of the first questions to ask is if the vehicle has a comprehensive service history available. If you're buying from a dealership or even a private seller, this information may be limited or nonexistent. If this is the case, requesting a vehicle history report is an option. A report is available from places such as AutoCheck and Carfax. The report will include the history such as the number of owners, recall information, odometer rollbacks, accidents, and salvage title information. more Maintenance Another question you'll want answered is who was responsible for servicing the vehicle. You'll want to know if a certified mechanic at a dealership handled the maintenance, if was taken care of by a mechanic who works independently, or if service was done by a knowledgeable friend. It's also important to know if service is up-to-date. Accidents Don't assume that the vehicle history report will have complete information about the vehicle. In the case of an accident, it is often reported but not always. Find out if the vehicle was involved in an accident and to what extent it was damaged, what repairs were necessary, were the repairs completed, and by whom. Inspection When considering buying a used car from a private seller or a used car lot, ask if you are allowed to take the vehicle to your choice of mechanic for a thorough inspection. If everything is as it should be regarding the state of the vehicle, the seller should not have any reason to deny your request. If the seller is reluctant, this is a red flag, Mileage and Warranty Check to see how many miles are on the car to determine if the odometer reading is in line with the year of the car. Ask about the warranty and if the vehicle has any warranty coverage left. If it does, you'll want to know exactly what is covered. Recalls Two things to find about regarding recalls are if there are currently any outstanding recalls or if there have been any recalls in the past and if the vehicle has been repaired accordingly. To find out if there were any recalls for the vehicle you're considering, use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's database for recall information. Entering the VIN number into the system generates the recalls specific to that vehicle. With this information, you can check the maintenance records to find out if the vehicle had been repaired. New Paint If the vehicle has been recently repainted, this is a red flag that needs to be investigated. Whether it's been repainted with the original color or if it's been painted a different color could indicate that the vehicle had been involved in an accident resulting in extensive body damage. Besides exterior body damage, there could be issues with the suspension and powertrain. When purchasing a used car is on your itinerary, be prepared. Help the process run smoothly by asking the right questions so you know what you're getting upfront.
