The small town of Morrison, TN, located to the southwest of McMinnville, has several excellent places to camp at. With a selection of “glamping” campgrounds nearby, as well as plenty of RV camping places, there is sure to be the perfect spot for you. With many parks and green spaces nearby, it is the perfect place to get outside and explore. 1. Sassy Springs Retreat This unique year-round campground offers a great experience for every outdoor enthusiast. With glamping style tents, RV sites, as well as simple so-called “primitive” sites there's something for every taste. It is possible to hike into the site along the many trails through the woods, and in fact, some of the primitive sites are right along the trail. Prices range from $85 for the larger tents to just $25 for the primitive sites. Reservations can be made through the website, and the site is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Rock Island State Park Campgrounds Rock Island State Park is an 885-acre park located at the headwaters of Centre Hill Lake. The park area includes the Caney Fork Gorge, which is located downriver of the Great Falls Dam, with plenty of paths and hiking trails through the gorge and the rest of the park. The park has two campsites, one larger one that has space for RVs and trailers as well as tents and includes 50 spots, some of which have sewerage hookups. The smaller ground is only for tents, and only has ten sites, however, each site is equipped with fire rings, charcoal burners, picnic tables, and electrical sockets. The rates for the sites are based on the dates and availability, however, they can be booked through the park website. 3. McMinnville Home Site This smaller campsite, located just to the south of the town has only a few sites and no electrical hook-ups, so the site will likely be fairly basic, however, the tranquil woodland setting is perfect to get away from the crowds. It's not possible to reserve online, so it would be best to reserve over the phone or in person. 4. Old Stone Fort State Park Located to the south of Morrison, this historic archaeological site has plenty of activities to enjoy. There are lots of hiking trails through the woods, following the wall of the ancient fort, built by Native Americans over 1500 years ago, and plenty of fishing spots along the Duck River. The Campground can be reached by crossing the stone bridge, which has a weight limit of 10 tons for two axel vehicles and 18 tons for three axels. There are 51 sites throughout the ground, all of which are accessible for both RVs and tents and secluded from each other by thick woodland. Whether you're a Tennessee native or planning a visit to the Volunteer State, you can find a number of interesting and unusual places to visit. Some of the spots offer unique insights into the history of the state. The Minister's Treehouse The world's largest treehouse is located in the state of Tennessee, and it's worth seeing. The owner of the Minster's Tree House, Horace Burgess, believes that he was divinely inspired to construct it. It's incredibly massive, featuring 10 stories that are supported by six large oak trees. Since construction began, the treehouse has used more than 250,000 nails to support it and keep it up in the trees. The estimated building cost was around $12,000, according to the owner, and it took 14 years to complete. Visitors used to be able to tour it, but the local fire marshals closed down this option in 2012 due to the potential fire risk. more Elliston Place Soda Shop Elliston Place Soda Shop is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in its original location within the city of Nashville. It's extremely popular among both locals and visitors, offering a charming atmosphere and tasty menu options. It originally opened in 1939 as part of a drug store, although the drug store side closed in 1965. Elliston Place still serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with sweet soda fountain-style treats. Daily specials are available, with options like roast turkey and dressing, fried catfish, and chicken and dumplings. You can also enjoy sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, salads, soups, and other tasty choices. Hermitage Hotel Men's Bathroom For a unique experience, pay a visit to the Hermitage Hotel men's bathroom. The historic hotel is on 6th Avenue North in Nashville, and the bathroom has actually won awards for its design and elements. When the hotel opened in 1910, it showcased a wide range of period flourishes, including the art deco-inspired men's restroom that is just off the expansive lobby. Men and women are welcome to step inside, where they can view the gleaming black and lime green glass tiles, terrazzo flooring, and complementary lime green fixtures. When you walk into the lobby, turn right and head down the stairs to the restaurant. You'll see the award-winning restroom just off the hallway. Timothy Demonbreun's Cave One of the state's early residents was Timothy Demonbreun, a fur trapper who came from a line of French Canadian nobles. He left his titles behind, starting a simple life in Tennessee where he set up camp in a tiny cave along the Cumberland River. You can still see the cave today, although from a distance, it looks like little more than a crack in the rock. Demonbreun lived in the temporary shelter for several months as he pursued his dreams of becoming a fur trader. You can't go inside, as the entrance is blocked by a cage of steel bars and is protected by a national landmark. If you want to take a peek, head along the right side of the riverbank for about a mile from downtown Nashville Tennessee has several interesting landmarks and sights to explore. Here are five of the best. more Prater's Bar-B-Que & Catering Prater's on Manchester Highway in Morrison is a rustic place with a warm welcome. The simple decor gives it a homely feel and regular customers travel from miles around to eat there. You order and pay at the counter and then you can grab a handful of roasted peanuts to keep you going until your food arrives. The menu has a great range and the portions are large. The ribs are to die for and the beef brisket is worth traveling for. Specialties include fried catfish and the frog legs plate. You can get family packs to feed four people. Hickory Creek Barbecue When you want to eat on the run, the Hickory Creek Barbecue food truck can be found at various locations such as farmers markets and malls. The super friendly staff will serve you with fresh smoked and barbecued meats at great value. Come prepared with a big appetite because you'll get a lot of food. The barbecued chicken wings are recommended as is the smoked pulled pork sandwich. You can now get Gatorade slushies at Hickory Creek too. Check out the Facebook page for their locations. Collins River BBQ & Cafe Collins River BBQ is a 15-minute drive from Morrison on East Main Street in McMinnville. Exposed brickwork, wooden floors, the eclectic decor, and low lighting give this place a cool, laid-back vibe. As well as serving great barbecued food, they specialize in craft beers, and offer live music. The menu features a varied selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and wraps, and combo plates. Their specialty sides include gouda mac and cheese, baked sweet potato, and sweet potato fries. Porky's Pit BBQ A similar distance in the opposite direction is Porky's Pit on McMinnville Highway in Manchester. It's a quaint little place with a walk-up window and drive through, and there is some seating outside. The staff are always friendly and the service is quick. On the menu you'll find hickory smoked beef brisket, pork, and turkey breast. Plates come with two vegetables of your choice. You can get family packs with a pound of meat, or half family packs. The pulled pork is highly recommended. High Roller Smokers BBQ The High Roller Smokers BBQ is a food truck based in McMinnville that serves at farmers markets and other events. They pride themselves on only buying the highest quality meats and ingredients for their customers. As well as the regular barbecue offerings, they have menu items that include herb and garlic pork loin and lemon pepper rubbed chicken. Their sides include roasted rosemary garlic potatoes, Fuji flamed roasted apples, and broccoli, rice, and cheese casserole. Check the Facebook page for locations.
