With a selection of “glamping” campgrounds nearby, as well as plenty of RV camping places, there is sure to be the perfect spot for you. With many parks and green spaces nearby, it is the perfect place to get outside and explore. 1. Sassy Springs Retreat This unique year-round campground offers a great experience for every outdoor enthusiast. With glamping style tents, RV sites, as well as simple so-called “primitive” sites there's something for every taste. It is possible to hike into the site along the many trails through the woods, and in fact, some of the primitive sites are right along the trail. Prices range from $85 for the larger tents to just $25 for the primitive sites. Reservations can be made through the website, and the site is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You are required to stay on the trails as they run through a protected area. more 2. Rock Island State Park Campgrounds Rock Island State Park is an 885-acre park located at the headwaters of Centre Hill Lake. The park area includes the Caney Fork Gorge, which is located downriver of the Great Falls Dam, with plenty of paths and hiking trails through the gorge and the rest of the park. The park has two campsites, one larger one that has space for RVs and trailers as well as tents and includes 50 spots, some of which have sewerage hookups. The smaller ground is only for tents, and only has ten sites, however, each site is equipped with fire rings, charcoal burners, picnic tables, and electrical sockets. The rates for the sites are based on the dates and availability, however, they can be booked through the park website. 3. McMinnville Home Site This smaller campsite, located just to the south of the town has only a few sites and no electrical hook-ups, so the site will likely be fairly basic, however, the tranquil woodland setting is perfect to get away from the crowds. It's not possible to reserve online, so it would be best to reserve over the phone or in person. 4. Old Stone Fort State Park Located to the south of Morrison, this historic archaeological site has plenty of activities to enjoy. There are lots of hiking trails through the woods, following the wall of the ancient fort, built by Native Americans over 1500 years ago, and plenty of fishing spots along the Duck River. The Campground can be reached by crossing the stone bridge, which has a weight limit of 10 tons for two axel vehicles and 18 tons for three axels. There are 51 sites throughout the ground, all of which are accessible for both RVs and tents and secluded from each other by thick woodland. Cumberland Caverns Cumberland Caverns has over 32 miles of underground passageways and caves to explore. You'll also see beautiful pools, waterfalls, and stunning rock formations all underground. Every day they offer walking tours that leave on the hour. You'll be given a helmet and helmet light before you get into the cave so you're safe. People of various activity levels can do the daily walking tours, as no climbing or crawling is required. It's recommended to wear a light jacket and closed-toe tennis shoes. more You can also choose to go on adventure tours which go through the wild parts of the cave. Participants can expect to climb over rocks, ladders, and on their hands and knees. You can even sign up for an overnight adventure trip to extend the fun. The caverns are open year round (with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) with hours from 9 am to 5 pm. The caverns are located 17 miles northeast of the town of Morrison. Rock Island State Park Rock Island State Park is located 26 miles northeast from Morrison and is an 883-acre park. This sits on the Center Hill Lake headwaters that go into Collin's River, Rocky River, and Caney Fork. Visitors can also visit the Great Falls Dam at the Caney Fork Gorge. From these overlooks, some of the most beautiful views are seen from the Eastern Highland Rim. A 19th-century cotton textile mill is located at the Great Falls that was in use over a century ago. The area became a start park in Tennessee in 1969. While you're at Rock Island State Park, you'll find plenty of activities to do. You can take your boat on the launch ramp to go on the lake to enjoy a day on the water. Kayakers and canoers will also enjoy the white water, although they're for experienced paddlers only. In the warm weather, swimming is a popular activity on the lake (but be advised no lifeguards are present). Nine hiking trails are also available in the area for those who would prefer walking or running. Riverfront Park Located 10 miles northeast from Morrison, there's an activity for everyone to do at Riverfront Park in McMinnville. The park has picnic areas, restrooms, a playground, fishing piers, boat docks, a volleyball court, ramp access, and a pavilion. The pavilion can hold up to 80 people and has charcoal grills in addition to restrooms, making it a great place to entertain for the afternoon. Children of all ages are able to enjoy the Riverfront Park when they're there. You're able to access the park throughout the year from dawn to dusk. To shorten the trail to two miles, take the new Connector Trail, where you'll end up next to two cemeteries from some of the first settlers in the area. Eagle Trail is a shorter trail at 1.4 miles long and goes from the Badger Flatt picnic area to the Blue Hole picnic area. You'll see plenty of flowers along the way as well as birds including osprey and kingfishers. If you're just looking for a quick hike, take the one-mile Moonshine Trail. This trail goes past an old moonshine still and has plenty of wildlife to see, such as barred owls and brightly-colored fire pink flowers. Although it's short at only 0.5 miles, Blue Hole Trail is very rugged, wet, and steep, so it's not for everyone. This goes along a scenic waterfall and has many steps along the way. The area has been a popular fishing spot for decades. Savage Gulf Natural Area Savage Gulf Natural Area is located between Nashville and Chattanooga and a good day trip for hikers of any level. There are several trails to choose from in this area depending on how far you want to go. A popular choice is the Big Creek Rim Trail that leads to the Laurel Trail, which is six miles long. You're rewarded with beautiful views at the top, so considering going at sunrise or sunset for stunning photos. During the early morning hours, it's common to see wildlife such as deer. There are also bathrooms on several of the trails that the state of Tennessee maintains on a regular basis. Burgess Falls State Park Burgess Falls State Park is a gorgeous day use park known for its beautiful scenery. There are four waterfalls here that are over 250-feet high, with one going deeper than 130 feet into a gorge. The area was originally populated by the Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee tribes, they used it as a hunting ground. A sawmill and gristmill opened on the river in the late 19th century and the area became a Tennessee State Natural Area in 1973. This helps protect the aquatic habitats and distinct forest. A variety of hiking trails are found here ranging from 0.3 miles to 1.5 miles. The Ridge Top Trail is 0.5 miles long and a moderate challenge, and you'll have great views of the bottom of the main canyon. The River Trail is 0.8 miles long, but considered very strenuous and difficult. Whether you want to go on a short, easy hike or a longer, steeper hike, there are a variety of different hiking trails to choose from when you're in Warren County. Rock City Gardens Rock City Gardens is situated on Lookout Mountain in Georgia, which is about 80 miles southeast of Morrison. This place offers a unique nature bonding experience and some of the most breathtaking views in the state. It features massive ancient rock formations, beautiful gardens with more than 400 native plant species, a 100-foot waterfall, and a vantage point where you can see seven different states. Some of the interesting activities you can do in the park include hiking on the Enchanted Trail, exploring the magical Fairyland Caverns, and visiting Mother Goose Village. Rock City Gardens opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 4 to 8 p.m., depending on the time of the year. Admission fees are $19.95 for adults and $11.95 for children 3 to 12 years old. Cumberland Caverns If you don't want to travel too far, you can visit Cumberland Caverns in nearby McMinnville. Designated a National Natural Landmark, this magnificent show cave is one of the longest caves in Tennessee. It features some of the most spectacular formations and largest underground rooms in North America, as well as crystal-clear pools, waterfalls, and a three-quarter-ton chandelier. Besides amazing geological features, you'll also see a 19th-century saltpeter mine and a fabulous underground pageant of light and sound during your tour. Cumberland Caverns is located about 20 miles northeast of Morrison. It's open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily walking tours are available every hour on the hour.
